The home of beautiful white, black, red & green sand beaches, pristine ocean waters, perfect surf, lush tropical rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, vibrant lava flows and even snow capped volcanic summits, Hawaiʻi is the most ecologically diverse place in the world. Surrounded by ocean and over two thousands miles away from the nearest continent, these breathtaking landscapes were able to harmoniously develop in ultimate isolation. Under these ideal conditions, the Hawaiian people that navigated the stars on canoe developed a highly complex society in tune with their surrounding environment.
"Mai Hawaiʻi Aku," in Hawaiian literally means "from Hawaiʻi." This is what our products are: FROM HAWAIʻI! We strive to support local families, farms, and businesses here in Hawaiʻi nei. More than just trying to locally source our ingredients, we infuse our products with Hawaiian culture, practices and understandings. Each ingredient is specifically chosen for their particular benefits and connection to Hawaiʻi and its people. Hawaiʻi is more than just a place or a name; it is the people, the history, the culture, and all of the life that it contains.
Born and raised on the island of Oʻahu, Kāneʻohe is the home of Ikaika Wright. Upon graduating high school, Ikaika was consumed with the question, "what am I to do with my life?" While most of his peers were celebrating this milestone, he and one of his closest friends found themselves in the mountains helping a family to restore a series of ancient terrace systems. The opportunity to focus upon connecting with his roots lead him to drop out of college. He eventually went back to university, graduating with a Bachelors in Hawaiian Studies and a minor in Cultural Anthropology, but for a number of years his primary commitment was to the restoration of those ancient systems of living and agriculture.
Since 2011, Ikaika has had an amazing opportunity to deepen his cultural understandings through the practice of lomilomi also known more widely as a Hawaiian massage. From his time with Kumu Alva Andrews it became very apparent that this practice was much more than just massage, it's a concept in well-being. As a member of Pā Ola Hawaiʻi, this "Hawaiian Holistic Approach to Quick Healing" has become a way of life.
As a Native Hawaiian, the story of these islands and the people who came before were always of great interest to him. Continuing their legacy has become one of his greatest passions in life. He can still be found in the mountains helping to restore our cultural treasures when he's not working with families and communities through the craft of lomilomi. He is a living example of integrity through his actions and service. All of his aloha and experiences have become the foundation that drives Mai Hawaii Aku.
